Dear Members of the
College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka,
I would first like to thank you all for
appointing me as the President of the
College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka for
the year 2023. I consider it an honour
and a privilege to be elected to lead
this prestigious institution once again.
I am much grateful to the membership for
the confidence placed in me.
While progressing in our collective
mission of developing laboratory
medicine in order to improve patient
outcomes and enable more efficient use
of healthcare resources, we face many
challenges. The rapidly expanding
healthcare landscape demands expansion
of testing, advances in technology and
opportunity for more personalized
medical care while ensuring the quality.
Unfortunately, the healthcare system in
Sri Lanka is facing one of its biggest
and unexpected challenges currently, due
to the ongoing economic crisis. As a
result, our laboratory service is
experiencing the biggest downfall of
human resources. Restricted
infrastructure facilities also hamper
improvement in the quality of the
laboratory service in Sri Lanka. Based
on proven models in other countries, I
believe that the consolidation of
resources should be done to achieve the
best possible quality and
cost-effectiveness in laboratory
service.
I believe that the expertise of the
pathologists as well as their experience
in laboratory systems that they were
exposed to during the overseas training
should be utilized to find a way out. We
should strive hard to develop innovative
solutions that improve access to care,
reduce costs, and promote health equity.
I hope that I will be able to set the
foundation for the concept I introduced
in my Presidential Address in 2016,
titled, "Futuristic view for quality and
cost-effective Histopathology service
for Sri Lanka". ( Journal of Diagnostic
Pathology, year 2017 Volume: 12 issue 1)
I wish all the very best for the
Laboratory Service of Sri Lanka and the
College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka
Dr. Sriyani Nanayakkara
